Did you know that the longest fence in the world is located in Australia? The fence is over five and a half thousand kilometres long and goes from Queensland to South Australia. Almost all of this is in deeply rural areas where the environment, weather and animals are a constant threat to the stability of the structure.

If you want rural fencing, you need to go to a certified expert to ensure that these challenges are met for the foreseeable future.

Environment

Much of rural Australia is quite dry, dusty terrain that can be extremely hard to dig into. Rural fencing contractors have special equipment that allows them to reach a stable level for the foundations in a way that would probably break any shovel you tried to do it with. In addition to that, in outback Australia it is not uncommon to find large bits of shale or rock right underneath the surface. This would pose a serious challenge to most fencing contractors and to yourself if you tried to DIY the fence. Luckily rural fencing contractors have methods of shoring up the foundations of your fence and keeping them steady in the least hospitable of places

Weather

Because the temperature can change so rapidly in rural Australia, it is not uncommon to see strong thunderstorms every week or so. The weather is a constant threat to structures out in the country, and that includes any rural fencing. To combat this, rural fences are usually made in the style of chicken wire, albeit much stronger, so that the wind doesn't blow it down. In addition to this, rural fencing often has much deeper roots than that of similar fences in the city. The aforementioned longest fence in the world has around 30cms of its total structure underground to anchor it. This requires a lot of effort to get right, but once it is finished it can last for decades.

Animals

While Australia's largest land predator is the dingo, there are many burrowing and curious creatures that are strong enough to damage most fences. Wombats, wild dogs, emus, kangaroos, camels, brumbies, foxes and even vermin can all wear down fences if they are not made of hardy material. Luckily, rural fencing contractors realise this, and only the toughest metals and the best-treated timber posts are used in the construction of these fences.

The advent of better materials has largely curtailed animal interference. Still, you do need to get those better materials, and the only way to ensure that is by going through a valid rural fencing contractor.
